About kitz.co.uk info

kitz.co.uk is one of the UK's largest DSL broadband resource & information sites.

This site contains a wealth of information such as how ADSL & VDSL (fibre) broadband works.
There's tips on choosing an ISP, help comparing ISP prices and ISP performance.

A large section of the site is devoted to self help diagnostics and what to do if you run into problems with your broadband connection, such as how to get dsl line stats from your router to understanding how such things as SNR and attenuation can affect your connection. There's also a vast array of tutorials and FAQs about broadband.

It is independently run and a not for profit site.  Unlike some broadband sites, we do not focus only on ISPs which pay commission. Although the site is well known and respected within the ISP industry, our position means that we are free to tell you 'as it is' and allows us to carry information on far more ISPs than most other broadband comparison sites.

If you have a broadband problem and need some help - or just want to say hello - our community forum is frequented by many knowledgeable people, who may be able to assist you. We are a family friendly oriented site so please feel free to join us.

The site is continually expanding, with new pages being added or amended. New pages are normally announced on the Forum.

xx G.INP roll-out suspended for some ECI cabinets.

April 09, 2016, 12:47:59 PM by kitz
As already reported Openreach commenced roll-out of G.INP to their ECI estate in March 2016.

We have been following progress of the roll-out and for the vast majority of lines, this appears to have been successful with most users have seen an increase in their sync rates.
However, it became apparent a few days ago that some lines were seeing behaviour that looks suspiciously like the ECI modem - Issue 1 problem.   Affected lines are able to sync but not get a valid PPP session.

Openreach have identified those lines which they suspect could be susceptible to this particular fault and as a precaution have suspended roll-out of g.inp for those affected lines only.
Retransmission has also been removed from any lines which have an increased risk of developing this fault, regardless if they were affected or not.

Discussion re: Suspension of G.INP on ECI cabs for affected lines

xx Openreach roll out G.INP retransmission to their ECI cabinets

March 18, 2016, 06:36:38 PM by kitz
It would appear that Openreach have now commenced rolling out G.INP retransmission to their ECI cabinets.  The first sign was on the 6th of March when one of our community members on an ECI cabinet had G.INP applied, things seemed to quieten down for a short while,  but as of the 17th of March a batch of users are reporting G.INP updates to their lines.

BT Openreach rolled out retransmission to their Huawei cabinets last year, but progress to the ECI's stalled after problems were discovered for those using modem routers with Lantiq based chipsets.  Openreach admitted at that time that their ECI/Lantiq equipment was not capable of upstream retransmission and many users were seeing a decrease in speed and increased latency.  A workaround was put in place for those users on Huawei cabinets with ECI modems, but progress for those on ECI cabinets temporarily came to a halt.

G.INP retransmission offers effective protection against Impulse Noise in order to improve line stability.  It also reduces overheads and latency when compared to traditional methods of interleaving and RS Error Correction.  The result is most users should find themselves with slightly faster connection speeds and better line stability.

Unfortunately though, it has been noted that a few users have experienced a loss of speed of circa 2Mbps.
It is too early yet to form anything conclusive, but we will continue to monitor and will report further when there are more users on ECI cabinets using G.INP to be able to conduct a more detailed analysis.

xx TP-Link TD-W9970 - Review

March 01, 2016, 06:06:06 PM by kitz
TP-Link has recently released its TD-W9970 combined VDSL modem/router in to the UK.
It's a low cost model which is ideal for those on a budget and retails at around £35.  Obviously for that price you arent going to get the latest spec wifi, but it does ok for wireless N.

We tested the TD-W9970 and was pleasantly surprised at what you get for your money: Read our TP-Link TD-W9970 review.

xx Moderator - burakkucat

Some of the more observant of you may notice that our resident black cat now wears a shiny new tag on his collar.

Burakkucat kindly stepped in last year to help out on the forums when I couldn't be around.  As a temporary measure he modded the broadband and tech sections, then I gradually kept adding more to the list.   However I think you will all agree that he is more than worthy of a position as full global mod, so Im happy to present him with his new hammer..

Thank you b*cat for your help.
